How can I get involved with TutorSmart?
TutorSmart is looking for After School tutors and volunteers to help students on a one-on-one or small-group basis. A tutor's job is to meet students wherever they are academically and provide them with strategies and tools so that they can succeed in school. Volunteers support the learning process for students through homework help, computer assistance and mentoring.
Education and Training
TutorSmart engages teachers as tutors in order to provide the best possible intervention for struggling students.
Tutors typically come from the schools where programs are housed but when we aren't able to fill all the positions with teachers from the school site, we open up the opportunity to Toledo Public School teachers from other schools.
Volunteers should have some college experience and a degree is preferred; passion for helping kids is a must. High School students will be paired with teacher tutors and other volunteers.
As a tutor or volunteer you must have patience and compassion, as many students you work with may have trouble understanding the content you are reviewing. You must also have a positive attitude and know ways to motivate students when they become frustrated by material they do not understand.
After School Tutors and volunteers are needed between 3:30 and 5:30 pm Monday through Thursday during the regular school year. As a tutor or volunteer, you may work with the same student every day, depending on the needs of the students and the partner program you are working through (After-School All-Stars, Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCA, PIE, ect)
